Where have all the people gone?

The Garden of Love by William Blake 1757—1827

I went to the Garden of Love,

And saw what I never had seen:

A Chapel was built in the midst,

Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut,

And ‘Thou shalt not’ writ over the door;

So I turn’d to the Garden of Love,

That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves,

And tomb-stones where flowers should be:

And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds,

And binding with briars, my joys & desires.

Genesis 6

Corruption on the Earth

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2 That the sons of God (b’nei ha-Elohim) saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair (beautiful, good, fine); and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive (rule, judge, plead) with man, for that he also [is] flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4 There were giants (Nephilim) (man that is a bully or tyrant) in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men (powerful, warrior, tyrant) which [were] of old, men of renown (men of honor, authority, fame).

Borrow and Run

The Lord told the Israelites to borrow from the Egyptians, but there was no going back or repayment.

Exodus8:27 We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he shall command us.

Exo 11:1  And the LORD said unto Moses,…

Exo 11:2  Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow (to ask, enquire, borrow, beg) of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.

Exodus 12:36  And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled (to snatch away, deliver, rescue, save, strip, plunder) the Egyptians.

Why would the Lord instruct the Israelites to borrow gold and silver, knowing they would not be returning to Egypt and thus would not repay what they borrowed?

Two reasons spring to mind:

What did David really look like?

Image by Jeff Jacobs from Pixabay

The story of David and his fight with Goliath has reached legendary status. A child with the utmost confidence in God taking on and slewing a giant with a single stone. It is a story we love to tell our children to further their faith in a caring, powerful, and supportive God. But what does Scripture tell us about this little boy. How does it really describe him?

Prayer, our Duty or our Privilege?

Last night I had a dream. A group of people were gathered about me and I was talking to them. It was an ancient setting, much like we see when we look at pictures of the old Greek philosophers and their students. Suddenly an elderly woman appeared and interrupted the conversation with a question, “Is prayer a privilege or a duty?” She then went on to describe how prayer was a privilege not an absolute necessity. Then with a smirk and derision all over her face, she came to stand right in front of me challenging me to say otherwise. That’s when I woke.

It was disturbing in as much as I was not given an opportunity to answer. But the whole thing got me thinking. Yes, it is a privilege to be able to enter the throne room of God through our prayers. It is a privilege to have them presented to God as a sweet aroma. It is a privilege to be able to speak to God. It is a privilege to be able to ask anything. It is a privilege to sit in heavenly places with Jesus Christ. It is a privilege to be able to call myself a child of God. But does that give me the right to say that I do not need to pray? Or I need to pray only in extreme circumstances, when I need something.

The Descendants of Adam

1 This [is] the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness (likeness, similitude, in the likeness of) of God made he him;

2 Male and female created he them; and blessed (to kneel, praise, salute) them, and called their name Adam (name of first man, ruddy, human being, person, mankind), in the day when they were created.

3 And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat [a son] in his own likeness (likeness, similitude, in the likeness of), after his image; and called his name Seth:

The Science of Success

Start training your brain.

After investigations, which included experimentation on cats, scientists in the 1940s and 50’s made the astounding discovery – the human brain can be programmed to be more alert and attentive in certain areas.

There is a part of the brain known as the Reticular Activating System and it has an important role in deciding your success or failure. Lori Rothstein describes it as ‘starting above your spinal cord and it’s about two inches long, it’s about the width of a pencil, and it’s where all your senses come in.’ i

To Be or Not To Be…Rich

“There’s Mr. Smith. I wonder how he made all his money?”

“God alone knows!”

“Ah, that’s why he always looks so worried.”

Business is all about making money, profiting and increasing one’s wealth. If ever there was anything that evokes un-Christian thoughts about a person who is successful, it is business. The joke at the start of this article is typical of what people think of successful businesspeople – they must have done something wrong to get where they are, or, nobody can make money doing business without doing something wrong. They must have committed some or other sin to get where they are, or as some one once said to me, ‘it is necessary for me to remove my Christian jacket before going to my place of business or people will walk all over me and I won’t make any money’. But it is written:

Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. (Isa 48:17)

Applied Christianity

Matthew.4:4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

For a long time, historians have been trying to make history relevant in the modern world. There was a time when the study of history was considered essential for anyone considering a career as a diplomat, politician, or in the military. After World War Two, history lost its relevance for the younger generation, but in recent years, there has been a major effort by historians to make their subject relevant again.
